1981 Topps Baseball Wax Pack Rip.

With 2011 Topps Baseball hitting the retail shelves, it made me feel nostalgic, so i decided to rip a 30 year old pack of Topps 1981 Baseball.

Rookies in '81 Topps include:
Baines Making the DH his own, Fernando Mania, Raines running wild, Gibson still had two good wheels, and Super Joe making the word "Prospector" a reality!

Lots of star power in the set as well. Rickey's second year topps too.

the '81 Topps set is like the red-headed stepchild of the pre-junk era wax. no HOF rookies are presented in the set (yet!). the cards are plagued with "grading issues".

wow, was 1.26.10 really a year ago already?

well, yes it was.

that was the day that i was diagnosed as being Type 2 Diabetic.
what a year it has been. at times it doesnt seem like a year already, and other times it seems much longer.

80's Topps, PSA, Self Submitting, Ripping, and all the fun that goes with it.

my current focus collecting wise is to gather all the greats that i was a fan of growing up in PSA slabs.

"Growing up" for me i suppose was the 80's (as i was born in '71)

this is somewhat of a challenge and presents itself to me in a variety of ways to persue this focus.

The "easy" way is to head over to eBay and type in the appropriate search in the search engine, sent the snipe or hit the BIN and bam, scratch that one off the e-list.

as easy as that sounds, it is also ultimately the cheapest.

problem being....i collect my 80's cards in PSA 9 form. Certainly not the most popular "grade" and not all that sought after because of it. that means that they dont get listed all that often.

another way to about getting those FineNines is to submit the cards yourself. that means a pretty significant hike in what it winds up costing, but also means that you submitted them yourtself.

submitting yourself is not what i would call difficult, but you do need to know what you are doing. having the cards to send in is something that isnt all that easy. the thing to remember is that we are talking about cards that are now over 22 years old. So, if one has owned them since release, odds are that they have been handled more then a a few times, plus, the quality control back then was not so great.

The way to get the cards that you want to submit is to open that old product NOW in 2011. Choosing which format to open is the key to finding the cards you need.

There are these venues to choose from:

Wax: 36 packs per box. Generally there are 15 cards to your 80's wax pack, and one stick of gum. You have to account for the last card in the pack being unusable because of the wax stain (from them sealing the pack), and most likely the top card in the pack has been "damaged" by the gum that has been on it for the last 20+ years.

Cello: 24 packs per box. Generally 28 cards to a pack, and one stick of gum. no wax to worry about, but the gum is in the middle of the pack, so it can rub on two cards at the same time. These also sometimes get wrapped too tightly at the factory, and does bad things to the corners of the cards and also might "warp" them.

Rack Pack: 24 packs per box. 48ish cards per pack. With three separate "containers" making up the rack pack. these were made to hang on hooks at the retail outlets

Vending: 500 cards per box, 24 boxes per case. No frills here, just cards! no wax, no gum, no fuss.

Factory Set: Just like Grandma used to get ya for xmas! the entire set in one (usually) nice box. Never seemed to be in numerical order though for some reason lol

Also keep in mind for all of the above is how the product was stored over the years. was it handled a lot? transfered ownership many times? cared for properly? Hot climate that made the gum deteriorate? etc. These are all things to consider.

Depending on what year(s) you are looking for, the price ranges are all over the place. 1980 Topps Wax is $10 a PACK and 1989 Topps Wax is $9 a BOX (36 packs). that all has to do with supply and demand, because lets not kid ourselves here, there is no such thing as a "rare" card made, ESPECIALLY in the 1980s lol

One of the things about "stocking up" on the late 80s stuff is the shipping cost, which is where it hits you the hardest. Generally, a vending case of 89 Topps (12,000 cards) is in the $75 area. but, shipping is going to run you in the $40 area due to weight (i believe the vending cases weigh about 40 pounds each)

Another issue that i would have, would be what to do with the 11,500+ cards that i would not want from the 12,000. and thats being generous on my part, because finding 500 submittable cards in a vending case is a great many, and im guess the number is much lower as ive yet to try this out.

Speaking to other collectors that submit stuff for grading, they recommend going with rack packs when ripping to submit. Reason being that the other formats tend to lend themselves to more damage right out of the packaging, and the racks tend to have stored them the best over the years.

Another thing to keep in mind is that doing this type of thing is for the love of collecting. there is no money to be made doing this anymore. sure 10 years ago you could, but not anymore. im fine with that, but when i tell people that im most likely going to be throwing away 11,000+ plus cards, they tend to *gasp* and cant wrap their minds around why those cards have no value. (if i had a fireplace, then they would make great kindling)

this sure has gone on for a long bit, eh? lol

well, i still cant make up my mind, but thats ok, part of the fun is trying to figure it all out. learning something new all the time is a good thing as far as im concerned

1.22.11 Wax Pack Rip, 1984 Donruss Baseball

i've decided to document my random wax pack rips when they occur. Those that know me, know that they dont happen all that frequently. but when they do, i will post the results for the interwebs to see.

Here's my first rip on this journey, a pack of 1984 Donruss Baseball. 1984 Donruss Baseball is well known as THE premier set of the 80's, and has had iconic status for a very very long time.

The "Hit" in this product is the Don Mattingly Rookie Card. These packs were very hard to find in New York in 1984. i opened a few packs of them in 1984, but not very many and dont remember what if anything, i pulled. it was 1985 when i started to rip wax like a wild child! lol

(after ripping and scanning, i realized that i wrote the wrong date, get over it lol)

It was a blast to open a 27 year old pack. Getting HOF Star Power made it even better! Centering was all over the place, but the Michael Jack was one of the best centered in the pack. The Concepcion DK was the back card of the pack.

Thanks for the read,
Eric

Just feeling slab overwhelmed

My focus is all over the place and it needs to be trimmed down. im having a hard time doing so.

ive been looking at other slabs to start collecting, and i just need not to, just too much to take on. grass is ALWAYS greener on the other side, that sure rings true for me.

just felt like typing out something, and this is cutting it.

i HAVE to keep telling myself that i cannot have EVERYTHING, be HAPPY with what i DO have.

thats so hard to do sometimes. sigh.

Does BGS now stand for "Be Gone Soon"?

Yesterday it was announced that "Tuff Stuff" magazine would be discontinued. While i was never a huge fan of the publication back in the day, it is a bit sad to see something from my youth fold.

That got me to thinking about magazines and sports cards as a whole.

There really is no longer much of a "need" for paper magazines relating to sports card pricing. the print media is simply too slow to represent sports cards. eBay has made sports cards a NOW NOW NOW! type of commodity.

Take Football for example. Playoffs, one HUGE game from someone, and BAM! the sheep hit eBay and GOTTA HAVE IT NOW! and boom, up goes the price. a print magazine simply cannot compete.

Beckett Magazine. This publication has been the gold standard for sports cards for the better part of the last 25 years. dispute that all you like, but you know its true. That being said, i can see a time in the not too distant future that they start shutting down the operation, piece by piece, meaning sport by sport. With the "Plus" that covers all sports in one, being the last one standing, until that one runs out of gas as well.

BGS. Beckett Grading Service. Although not "First" on the scene, they are currently "King" of the modern graded card world.

i could see them having difficulties in the future. they are simply handing out way too many BGS 10's nowadays. i understand that the people submitting are better trained for what to look for when sending in their cards, but enough is enough already.

in 2006, just 5 years ago, a BGS 9.5 actually meant something. Now in 2010, a 9.5 is EXPECTED and anything less is FROWNED upon. in 2006 a BGS 10 was a DREAM, now its not commonplace, but sure isnt all that rare anymore.

This could lead to their downfall down the line.

For as much as people like to piss on PSA, keep in mind that they have a strong following of people that not only submit stuff to them, but PAY them just for the right to do so.

One would think that that would turn people off, but that doesnt seem to be the case, as PSA has such a heavy workload, that they have a hard time meeting their turnaround times that they tell you it will take to get your cards back.

Just some stuff to think about i suppose.

Did Upper Deck KILL the baseball card "hobby' in 1989?

i was thinking about this today during my walk. Sure Score came along a year before Upper Deck, but i really don't know.

What if it would have remained Topps/Donruss/Fleer/Score heading into the 90's, would we be where we are today?

1989 UD was a huge change in the "hobby". Top notch paper stock, full color pic on the back, and a counterfeit proof hologram on the back as well.

1990 "Find The Reggie!" lead to the mass insertion of autographed cards into packs.

if these things hadnt come along, im still sure that there would still have been millions of trees slaughtered during the mass production years.

but where would we be in 2011? Would there even be cards still put out?

i know many collectors that, quite frankly, "hate" Topps now that they are the only company allowed to make MLB Baseball Cards. Some, if not most of those guys were collecting in the 80s like i was.

ive really lost interest in everything newer then 1989. don't know why that is, but thats how it seems to be lately.

Happy New Year Everybody

i hope that everyone had a good time last week as the new year came about.

i dont do resolutions...things that you think you should change, should be done when you think of them, not because a new year is here.

i should try to blog more, but i never really have that much to say.
or if i do, i dont feel like doing all that typing to get it out there.

the new year has me focused on OPC baseball, Topps Hockey, and PSA Slabs.
ive really fallen for those cut-with-a-butter-knife carboard pics of baseball players, made from the country up north.

the new year also means that Pearl Jam is now 20 years old. cripes, where does
the time go? Thank You to my friend Kenny for getting me into them all those
years ago.
